Can I trust the temperature ratings?
Read this one carefully, because it is where most listings mislead you.
European and American brands usually publish an EN/ISO 23537 rating — an independent lab test that lets you compare bags from different makers on the same scale. The makers we stock — Black Ice, Aegismax, Naturehike — publish their own temperature figures instead. Those are not lab-certified, and we will not pretend otherwise. Every temperature on this site is labelled “manufacturer” for exactly that reason.
So how do you compare? Use the numbers that are objective: fill power, fill weight in grams, and total weight. 700 g of 800-fill-power down is 700 g of 800-fill-power down whoever sells it. We publish all three on every bag. Then treat any temperature figure — ours or a brand’s — as a starting point, and give yourself a margin.
One more thing: “rated to −9°C” is usually the limit rating, the temperature a warm sleeper survives. The comfort rating is the one you actually sleep well at, and it is typically 5–7°C warmer.
What do fill power and fill weight mean?
Fill power (650, 800, 850) measures the quality of the down — how much loft you get per gram. Fill weight is how many grams are in the bag. You need both. A 800FP bag with 400g of down is warmer than a 650FP bag with 450g, and lighter. A listing that gives you one number and not the other is hiding something.
