The E4201 is AONIJIE's aluminium Z-pole: a fixed-length 7075 aluminium pole that folds in three. AONIJIE weighs it at about 160 g a pole for the 110 cm size, 173 g at 120 cm and 188 g at 130 cm.

It has tungsten steel alloy tips, an EVA foam grip and a polyester and Hypalon wrist strap, in AONIJIE's rainbow finish of blue, red and gold sections.

Folding poles that take a knock.

Best for: Trail runners and hikers who want light folding poles that shrug off rough use.
Think twice if: Fixed length, so choose the size that suits your height, and they won't suit most trekking-pole tents. Three sections fold longer than four-section poles, and AONIJIE doesn't publish the folded length. The carbon E4204 is 27 to 34 g a pole lighter and folds to about 30 cm.

The 110 cm pair weighs about 320 g by AONIJIE's figures, in a metal that copes with rough use.
Folds in three
Three sections fold Z-style, so the poles stash in a pack or on a running vest when the trail flattens out.
7075 aluminium
Aluminium tends to bend rather than snap if a pole gets caught between rocks. Tungsten steel tips grip rock, gravel and dirt.

Choosing trekking poles

Poles take weight off your knees on the way down and steady you on creek crossings and loose ground.

Z-foldThis one
Folds into three like a tent pole and packs short, so it fits inside a pack or on its side. Fixed length, or a small adjustment range.
Telescopic
Slides to length with a lock, so one pair suits several people and every slope. Longer when packed.

Length
With the tip on the ground next to your foot, your elbow should be at about a right angle. Shorten them for climbs, lengthen for descents.
Carbon or aluminium
Carbon is lighter and damps vibration. Aluminium is heavier but bends rather than snaps if you fall on it.
For a trekking-pole tent
Check the pole height the tent needs, usually 115 to 135 cm, and that your poles lock at that length.
Use the straps
Hand up through the strap, then grip. The strap takes your weight, so you don't have to squeeze.

Is the price for one pole or two?

Two. Every option is a pair of poles.

Which length do I need?

AONIJIE doesn't publish a height guide for the E4201. Its guide for the E4204 Z-pole is 110 cm for heights of 155–165 cm and 120 cm for 175–185 cm. Shorter poles suit steep climbs and longer poles suit descents.

Is the price for one pole or a pair?

The option you choose says so. Unless it says "single pole", you get a pair.

Can I take them on a plane?

Most airlines don't allow trekking poles in the cabin. Pack them in checked luggage; Z-fold poles fit easily inside a pack.

When will it arrive?

We dispatch in 1–3 business days, then it's 10–20 business days on the way to Australia. There's no warehouse or shopfront in between, which is why it takes longer and costs less. If you have a trip booked, order at least four weeks before you leave. You'll get a tracking number by email when the parcel is scanned. Full details on the Shipping page.

Will my order arrive in one parcel?

Gear from the same maker usually travels together. If your order has gear from more than one maker, it can arrive in two or three parcels, sometimes a few days apart. You'll get an email with a tracking number for every parcel, so you always know what's on the way.

What if it isn't right?
