The TuYe R8.8 is the warmest mat in Naturehike's TuYe series: 12 cm thick, in 20D nylon with a TPU coating, with an eight-layer reflective inner structure. Naturehike rates it R8.8 and suggests it for use down to about −30°C. Those are the maker's figures.

Two sizes: a mummy cut at 186 × 58 cm, and a rectangular mat at 196 × 64 cm that weighs 570 g (maker's figure) and packs to about 22 × 13 cm. A pump sack comes in the box.

Winter warmth without a winter-weight mat.

Best for: Snow camping, winter trips in the Alps and Tasmania, and cold sleepers who want one warm mat for the whole year.
Think twice if: The R-value is Naturehike's own figure. The Nemo, Sea to Summit and Therm-a-Rest mats at higher prices publish ASTM-tested ratings, so treat 8.8 as a guide rather than a like-for-like number. A 12 cm air mat is bouncy and takes a while to fill: use the pump sack rather than your breath, which puts moisture inside. For summer walks it's more mat than you need, and stock of each size is limited.

The 196 × 64 cm rectangular mat weighs 570 g (maker's figure) and packs to about 22 × 13 cm. The mummy packs smaller again, to about 18 × 10 cm.

How warm a mat do you need?

R-value measures how well a mat stops the ground pulling heat out of you. Higher is warmer, and R-values add up when you stack two mats. This one is R 8.8.

R-values are the makers' own figures, and we say on each page who measured them. The industry test is ASTM F3340; not every maker uses it. A mat under a down bag matters as much as the bag: down underneath you is crushed flat, so below freezing the mat does most of the work.

Questions

How do I inflate it?

Use the pump sack in the box: fill it with air, roll the top closed and squeeze the air into the inflation valve. Repeat until the mat is full, and top up with a breath if you like it firmer. Open the separate deflation valve to pack up.

Mummy or rectangular?

The mummy is 186 × 58 cm with tapered ends, so it's lighter and packs smaller. The rectangular mat is 196 × 64 cm: pick it if you're over about 180 cm or move around a lot at night.

What does the R-value mean?

It measures how well the mat stops the ground pulling heat out of you. As a rough guide: about 2 for summer, 2 to 4 for three seasons, 4 to 5 for cold nights and frost, and 5 or more on snow. R-values add up, so a foam mat under an inflatable adds its R-value.

Is it noisy?

Some insulated mats rustle when you roll over, because of the reflective layer inside. If it's a concern, the product notes above say what the maker uses inside.

What if it gets a puncture?

Carry the repair patches that come with it. Find the leak by listening, or with soapy water, then clean, dry and patch. Put a groundsheet or footprint under your tent and clear sharp sticks before you pitch.

When will it arrive?

We dispatch in 1–3 business days, then it's 10–20 business days on the way to Australia. There's no warehouse or shopfront in between, which is why it takes longer and costs less. Will my order arrive in one parcel?

Gear from the same maker usually travels together. If your order has gear from more than one maker, it can arrive in two or three parcels, sometimes a few days apart. You'll get an email with a tracking number for every parcel, so you always know what's on the way.

Will I pay duty or GST on delivery?

No. Orders under A$1,000 clear into Australia without additional duty or GST, so there's nothing to pay when your parcel arrives.

What if it isn't right?

You have 30 days from delivery to return it unused and in its packaging. If it's faulty or doesn't match what we published, we pay the return postage and refund in full. See Returns.
