Choosing a shelter

  • Trekking-pole tent: your poles are the frame, so it's light. The 1–2 person pole tent is 1.38 kg with two doors.
  • Freestanding tent: its own poles hold it up, so it pitches on rock and platforms. The 2 person backpacking tent is 1.85 kg.
  • Hammock: off the ground and away from roots and rocks; needs two trees 4–5 m apart. Add the rain fly or a tarp for weather.

Pack a few solid pegs for hard or sandy ground, and a Tyvek mat to keep your gear out of the mud.
