- Think twice if
- The maker doesn't publish the pack's weight or back length. For a lighter overnighter, the 50 L Hiking Backpack lists both.
60 L
For four-plus nights, winter kit or carrying a shared tent.
Hip belt and chest strap
Moves the weight onto your hips.
Rain cover included
No extra purchase for wet days.
What size pack?
Buy for the longest trip you'll do most often. A half-empty big pack carries worse than a full one the right size. This one is 60 L.
| Trip | Size | What goes in it |
|---|---|---|
| Day walks and trail runs | 10 to 30 L | Water, food, a warm layer, rain jacket, first aid |
| One or two nights | 30 to 45 L | Add a compact bag, mat, shelter and a small cook kit |
| Multi-day walks | 45 to 65 L | Several days of food, and room for cold-weather layers |
Fit by back length
Measure from the bone at the base of your neck to the top of your hips. That, not your height, decides the size.
Frame or frameless
Frameless packs are the lightest but carry best with a light load. A frame moves heavier loads onto your hips.
Line it
Very few packs are waterproof. Put a pack liner or dry bags inside, and keep your sleeping bag in one.
Heavy things close
Pack food and water against your back, between your shoulder blades, and light, bulky gear at the bottom.
The numbers
Taken from the maker's own listing and spec cards for this exact model; anything marked our guide is ours. Where the maker doesn't publish something, the line is left out rather than guessed.
