The Gale Terk UL is Naturehike's lighter folding pole: a 3K carbon fibre upper section on 7075 aluminium, folding Z-style to 35 cm. Naturehike weighs the small at 189 g a pole and the large at 221 g.

An external lever lock sets the length: 103–120 cm (small) or 115–135 cm (large). You get EVA grips with a 10 cm extension, adjustable wrist straps, tungsten steel tips, mud baskets and tip protectors.

Sold as a pair. Grey comes in both sizes; green and purple in the small size.

Best for: Day walkers and multi-day hikers who only want poles out on the climbs and descents, travellers, and anyone short on pack space.
Think twice if: Folding poles have more joints than telescopic ones, so they feel a touch less stiff when you lean hard on them. Each size only adjusts 17 to 20 cm, so pick the one that suits your height. For a trekking-pole tent, check its pole height is inside the range. The all-aluminium Gale Terk PRO is only 8 to 13 g a pole heavier and costs less.

Folds to 35 cm
The lower three sections fold Z-style and the top telescopes, so each pole packs to 35 cm (36 cm for the large). Stow them inside your pack between the steep bits.
189 g a pole
The small pair weighs 378 g and the large 442 g, by Naturehike's figures. A 3K carbon fibre upper section over 7075 aluminium keeps the weight down.
Lever lock and a long grip
An external lever lock sets the length: 103–120 cm or 115–135 cm. The EVA grip runs 10 cm down the shaft, so you can choke down on a steep climb without stopping to adjust.

Choosing trekking poles

Poles take weight off your knees on the way down and steady you on creek crossings and loose ground.

Z-foldThis one
Folds into three like a tent pole and packs short, so it fits inside a pack or on its side. Fixed length, or a small adjustment range.
Telescopic
Slides to length with a lock, so one pair suits several people and every slope. Longer when packed.

Length
With the tip on the ground next to your foot, your elbow should be at about a right angle. Shorten them for climbs, lengthen for descents.
Carbon or aluminium
Carbon is lighter and damps vibration. Aluminium is heavier but bends rather than snaps if you fall on it.
For a trekking-pole tent
Check the pole height the tent needs, usually 115 to 135 cm, and that your poles lock at that length.
Use the straps
Hand up through the strap, then grip. The strap takes your weight, so you don't have to squeeze.

Is the price for one pole or two?

Two. Every option is a pair of poles.

Which size do I need?

Naturehike's guide is small (103–120 cm) for heights of 150–170 cm and large (115–135 cm) for 170–190 cm. On flat ground, set the length so your elbow sits at about a right angle.

Is this the same pole as the Naturehike Long Wind?

Yes. Naturehike sells this pole as both the Gale Terk and the Long Wind, and some of its photos show the Long Wind name.

Is the price for one pole or a pair?

The option you choose says so. Unless it says "single pole", you get a pair.

Can I take them on a plane?

Most airlines don't allow trekking poles in the cabin. Pack them in checked luggage; Z-fold poles fit easily inside a pack.

When will it arrive?

We dispatch in 1–3 business days, then it's 10–20 business days on the way to Australia. There's no warehouse or shopfront in between, which is why it takes longer and costs less. If you have a trip booked, order at least four weeks before you leave. You'll get a tracking number by email when the parcel is scanned. Full details on the Shipping page.

Will my order arrive in one parcel?

Gear from the same maker usually travels together. If your order has gear from more than one maker, it can arrive in two or three parcels, sometimes a few days apart. You'll get an email with a tracking number for every parcel, so you always know what's on the way.

Will I pay duty or GST on delivery?

No. Orders under A$1,000 clear into Australia without additional duty or GST, so there's nothing to pay when your parcel arrives.

What if it isn't right?
