The Troues R3.0 is a folding egg-crate mat made from layers of IXPE closed-cell foam with a reflective aluminium film. It is 185 × 56 cm, 2.5 cm thick and about 480 g (maker's figure). Naturehike rates it R3.0 and suggests it for use down to about −5°C.

It folds concertina-style to 56 × 15 × 18 cm and straps to the outside of a pack. Army green or yellow.

The mat that can't go flat.

Best for: Walkers who want a mat that can't puncture, anyone who sits on their mat at every break, and winter campers adding warmth under an air mat.
Think twice if: Foam is bulky: it rides on the outside of your pack, not inside. At 2.5 cm it's firm, so side sleepers usually want an air mat on top. 480 g is heavier than the lightest air mats of similar warmth.

How warm a mat do you need?

R-value measures how well a mat stops the ground pulling heat out of you. Higher is warmer, and R-values add up when you stack two mats. This one is R 3.0.

R-values are the makers' own figures, and we say on each page who measured them. The industry test is ASTM F3340; not every maker uses it. A mat under a down bag matters as much as the bag: down underneath you is crushed flat, so below freezing the mat does most of the work.

Questions

Can I use it under an air mat?

Yes. It protects the air mat from sharp ground and adds insulation. R-values of stacked mats roughly add up, so it's a cheap way to make a three-season air mat warmer in winter.

What does the R-value mean?

It measures how well the mat stops the ground pulling heat out of you. As a rough guide: about 2 for summer, 2 to 4 for three seasons, 4 to 5 for cold nights and frost, and 5 or more on snow. R-values add up, so a foam mat under an inflatable adds its R-value.

Is it noisy?

Some insulated mats rustle when you roll over, because of the reflective layer inside. If it's a concern, the product notes above say what the maker uses inside.

What if it gets a puncture?

Carry the repair patches that come with it. Find the leak by listening, or with soapy water, then clean, dry and patch. Put a groundsheet or footprint under your tent and clear sharp sticks before you pitch.

When will it arrive?

We dispatch in 1–3 business days, then it's 10–20 business days on the way to Australia. There's no warehouse or shopfront in between, which is why it takes longer and costs less. Will I pay duty or GST on delivery?

No. Orders under A$1,000 clear into Australia without additional duty or GST, so there's nothing to pay when your parcel arrives.

What if it isn't right?

You have 30 days from delivery to return it unused and in its packaging. If it's faulty or doesn't match what we published, we pay the return postage and refund in full. See Returns.
